PM returns to familiar stance

Prime minister Tony Blair opened a conference on climate change today on a familiar note, one that Blair has trumpeted before, Global Warming. The 3 day conference is the kick-off to this year's G-8 Summit July 6-8 in Gleneagles, Scotland. Undoubtedly Blair's convictions will be put to the test in the face of a disappointing response from the Bush administration, whose abysmal record on environmental issues has become an embarrassment to Whitehall. Perhaps the English dragon can take back the high road regarding the environment as well as the Highlands.



February 01, 2005 - LONDON

The British government opened a three-day international conference on climate change Tuesday, insisting that countries can cut carbon emissions without affecting economic growth.

Britain has made tackling global warming a priority for its chairmanship of the G-8 this year, and hopes the gathering of scientists from Europe, Asia, Africa and America will lead to a new international consensus on the threat posed by rising temperatures.
